02 / Field notes
What can you do in the Gap?
Remedy describes the Gap as a space within Dylan's mind rather than an ordinary inventory screen. Weapon Forms, supernatural Combat Abilities and Talents are managed here. A September developer briefing also says players can craft Artifacts and test builds in the Gap.
The practical distinction is between collecting a possibility in Manhattan and making it part of a build. Finding an Untapped Artifact is not the same thing as equipping a finished Artifact: the crafting step belongs in the Gap.

When should you return?
The official combat explanation places Gap access outside combat. Once a new Form, boss-granted ability, Talent or Untapped Artifact is available, review the combination before judging it in the next encounter. Remedy says travel between Manhattan's Zones and the Gap is near-instantaneous, but has not published a full list of every access point.
Do not read preview menu images as a complete launch inventory. The first run deliberately limits some choices; New Game Plus expands Talent options, Combat Ability combinations and Artifact capacity.

A practical order for checking a new build
The Gap joins several systems that are easy to confuse. Start by checking the Aberrant's Primary and Secondary Forms, then the Combat Ability choice, then Talents and crafted Artifacts. An Untapped Artifact found in the world is a crafting input; it is not already an equipped passive. The Gap is also described as a place to test a build before taking it into another encounter.
This order is a planning aid, not a prescribed optimal build. The published material shows different roles for Forms and abilities but no trustworthy final ranking. NG+ expands combinations and carries much combat progress forward, while story-gated movement still has to be reacquired.

The Gap: what players need to know
We use the Gap as a comparison and testing stop between encounters. Keep an unlocked option, a crafted Artifact and an equipped slot separate when you read a build.
