Do not confuse these states
The acquisition and equipment steps are distinct. The numbers below describe slots, not the total number of Artifacts in the game.
| Term | What it means | Player action |
|---|---|---|
| Untapped Artifact | A discovered, not-yet-crafted object | Bring it to the Gap |
| Crafted Artifact | Usable passive equipment | Inspect its modifier and trade-off |
| Equipped Artifact | A crafted item assigned to a slot | Compare it with the rest of the build |
| Fourth slot | Additional NG+ capacity | Available on a later run |

What can an Artifact change?
Remedy describes passive effects covering survival, combat, exploration and resources. Some modifiers have conditions or trade-offs, so the highest-looking bonus is not automatically the best fit for every fight.
The official explanation gives a three-slot limit on a first playthrough and a fourth slot in New Game Plus. It does not provide a complete catalog of effects, crafting costs or acquisition locations.
03 / Field notes
How should you evaluate one?
Start with the build's weakness. A modifier that helps resource recovery serves a different purpose from one that improves survival. Check whether the effect requires a condition you can reliably trigger with your chosen Forms and Combat Abilities.
A preorder or edition-linked Artifact is a specific entitlement, not evidence that every Artifact is sold separately or that the full crafting system is bypassed. Keep edition contents and in-game discoveries separate.
04 / Field notes
From discovery to an equipped effect
The important sequence is discovery, crafting and equipping. Untapped Artifacts are found during exploration, then crafted into usable Artifacts in the Gap. An Artifact changes a build as a passive component, alongside the active decisions made through the Aberrant and Combat Abilities. That is why a list of discovered names cannot be treated as an inventory of currently equipped effects.
The announced first-run limit is three Artifact slots, with a fourth opening in New Game Plus. That is a capacity rule, not proof of every Artifact's final effect, rarity or crafting ingredient. Compare an Artifact by what it adds to your present combat loop rather than assuming every found object belongs in a strongest-build list.

Artifacts and Crafting: what players need to know
Before we rank an Artifact, we want its effect and trigger condition. The three-versus-four figure tells us the equip limit, not the collectible count.
