Do you have to defeat every Resonant?

Not every Resonant is mandatory. Remedy's lead level designer says players are not forced to defeat every encounter or one particular boss. The story may require a number of victories from a larger set, but the required count and full roster have not been published.

That makes boss choice part of route planning. It does not tell you which encounter is easiest, which power a named boss grants, or whether a particular fight can be skipped in the final game without consequences.

For threats beyond named encounters, browse enemy factions and bosses in the Wiki index.

Why Resonant fights matter

Combat Ability rewards

Resonant victories connect boss progression to the build system. Some rewards involve choices; a general rule is not enough to name an individual boss's exact ability.

A changing world

The August developer interview describes harder encounters as Resonants fall. A defeated boss affects more than the immediate arena.

Prepare for the arena, the Falter window and the next attempt

A useful strategy needs to state the game version, loadout, settings, telegraphs and reward evidence. Reviews consistently recommend leaving an optional Resonant, improving the build and returning when a fight becomes a damage or survival wall.

  • Learn what changes the safe area of the arena.
  • Distinguish a ranged attack from a persistent ground hazard.
  • Use Falter and executions to create health-recovery windows instead of trading indefinitely.
  • Test one setup change at a time.
  • Treat phase counts, timings and damage values as unverified until reproduced.
